During the dark days of the first ‘global’ lockdown we decided to shake things up a bit and participated in the Financial Times Global Legal Hackathon.  You can read about our project, if you are interested, here – but basically we are aware of the fact that small and medium sized companies take a bigger hit than large companies during crises and we wanted to consider ways in which we, in our own little way, could help mitigate this.  It was a very intense, but ultimately very inspiring experience as we worked with a team of people spread across the globe, who had only come together ‘virtually’ for the purpose of this project.  One lesson we learnt from this exercise was that as the world seemed to be closing down and becoming more remote it was more important than ever to reach out and push ourselves outside of our comfort zone.

Practically, what good came of this project?  Well, we took the insights gleaned from this project and spun them in to a contract assessment tool which is designed to help small and medium-sized businesses within the industrial sector to risk assess their contracts of a value less than AUD 1 million.  The point of this is to help you decide on the appropriate course of action based upon the level of risk associated with each contract.  Perhaps surprisingly, as we are a law firm, our tool does not always recommend that you seek the advice of a law firm, as that might not always be the appropriate course of action.

The tool is free to use and we would be interested in your feedback or ideas for how to improve the concept.  We are keen to add more ‘self-service’ tools to our suite of services over the coming months and if there was anything you would like us to focus on or prioritise please get in touch and let us know.
